School Based Vocational Education
Work towards a Horse Riding Instructor Qualification
It is now possible to follow your dreams and work towards an equestrian qualification while still at school. So far the closest option was to do a course in Agriculture.
This is a great opportunity for students who are already involved with riding, perhaps have your own horse and want to hook into learning something you are interested in, and can use to earn an income once qualified.
Students can study the Certificate III in Sport (Coaching) Equestrian from year 11 in high school and have the results as part of their higher school certification.
The Certificate III in Sport Coaching Equestrian is divided in three parts:
- Building Block 1 – Horse Management and Risk Assessment
- Building Block 2 – Beginning to Teach: Teaching methods, Selection of Horses, Legal issues and Teaching beginner riders
- Building Block 3 – Lungeing the horse, Lungeing the rider, Teaching the Beginner, Competition Preparation and Business Skills

This is how it works:
- You discuss the options with your parents and your school’s career officer
- Some schools may have a budget for course payments, but generally most students pay for their own course material
- You can pay per unit and pay for the course as you go
- We come to an agreement with all parties regarding a training plan and decide how much study you can undertake per year
- You enrol in the course either by correspondence (we send the books and DVDs and you study and do the assignments and send them back to us for marking) or online (you print out your own texts, we send the DVDs, you do your assignments online)
- You do your theory study at school or at home, if you really like the course, but practical work needs to be done with either an approved local assessor or with us via video
- Once the training plan is agreed on, the Department of Education Training and the Arts (QLD) or the Study Authority of your state is informed of the codes of the units you are undertaking
- At the completion of these units we inform the school/ study authority so the results can be included in your records.

If you or your career officer have any questions please email us or phone us during work hours at 07-3209 1648 and we will be happy to explain the career options in detail.
